INTRODUCTION
Naturism is a fundamentally liberating lifestyle, which has been an
important part of my adult life. Those who have yet to experience naturism are
referred to by naturists, maybe in a somewhat derogatory way, as textiles, and
to the latter naturism is perceived in a variety of different ways from the
recollection of saucy seaside postcard cartoon images to a fantasy land of
opportunities for risqué goings-on and even orgies of mind blowing
dimensions - dream on! It is a cliché for naturists to suggest that the
sensory freedom experienced by the shedding of one's clothes frees the
individual from the worries, stresses and strains of everyday life in a hectic
world that seems to become more troubled by the day. I can assure you, Gentle
Reader, that it's true. |

The International
Naturist Federation agonized long and hard before coming up with the following
definition: 'Naturism is a way of life in harmony with nature, characterised by
the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging self
respect, respect for others and for the environment.' This is not a bad
starting point. In my experience of meeting many naturists in numerous
different naturist resorts and facilities around the world, I have discovered
that naturists are generally more open, friendly, communicative and caring of
the environment than their textile counterparts. We tend to pre-judge people by
the way they dress; yet nakedness prevents the discernment of social
differences, which, in turn, encourages easy communication.

In this book I do
not attempt a crusade of conversion to the naturist lifestyle but I hope to
explain in words and show in photographs why I have been so fortunate to have
experienced the freedom of naturism for so long by meeting and working with so
many delightful people in so many lovely parts of the world. Indeed these pages
also provide the opportunity to introduce you to a wonderful, worldwide variety
of naturist resorts and facilities where blue skies and warm sunshine welcome
your nakedness. Inevitably, the question is asked: 'Why do you mainly
photograph attractive young ladies?' Simple - attractive young ladies with
captivating smiles and pictured in naturist surroundings are perfect
ambassadors for naturism. Indeed I consider myself privileged, not only to have
photographed so many beautiful ladies, but also that so many of them have
become such trusted friends. I owe them all a massive debt of gratitude as I do
all those naturists who, by their cheerful participation, have made possible
the production of our many films about naturism.
And it's also
important to thank both Mark Nisbet, one time Editor of H&E, and Alison
Brown, one of the featured Angels seen above with me on Saunton Sands in 1990,
for so kindly sharing the writing of the Foreword between them. So, in these
pages please join me in a trip down memory lane spanning twenty-five years,
experience something of the natural world of naturism, and meet many of the
special people who have shared it with me. Charlie Simonds |
